Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month
While soaking in the remnants of the Summer weather, team HPNE hosted a food truck event in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month.
What is National Hispanic Heritage Month?
Although we are celebrating in September, National Hispanic Heritage Month actually takes place during the 30-day period between September 15th and October 15th. Originally only celebrated as a week, it was extended to a full month dedication in 1988. The beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month on September 15th is significant, as it marks the anniversary of independence for five Latin American Countries: Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala. Also included within this time frame is the celebration of independence for Mexico on September 16th, and Chile on September 18th.
We celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month to honor the contributions and cultures of individuals in America with heritage from South America, Spain, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. Many people of hispanic descent have made major contributions to the biotech and biopharma industries, including Sara Borrell Ruiz, Luis F. Lelior, and Albert Baez.
Celebrating Culture Through Food
As we honor the culture and contributions of those with Hispanic Heritage, we held a food truck event this month where all employees enjoyed empanadas from Espanglish Empanadas.
There has always been a direct connection between culture and food. Food can have an effect on the way people of a certain culture enjoy their meals, and their religious practices. Eating is often also a time for community, where people gather to talk and bond with friends and family.
Other Ways to Support
There are a variety of ways to get involved with National Hispanic Heritage Month. One great way is to follow along with the weekly topics from the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Hispanics. They have created weekly themes throughout the month, including topics such as jobs and the economy, education and mental health and wellness, all revolving around Hispanic heritage. There are a variety of events and learning opportunities to accompany these themes, which can be found on their Hispanic Initiative Events Calendar.
